This September marked a new beginning for The English Martyrs Catholic School and Sixth Form College (EMS) as Mr Glenn Thompson stepped into his role as Head of School. With a renewed sense of purpose and a clear vision for the future, Mr Thompson’s leadership is already making a significant impact across the school community.

Under his guidance, EMS has placed a strong emphasis on improving student attendance - a key priority for the academic year. The school has seen a noticeable uplift in attendance figures compared to last year, thanks to strategic investments in staffing and a dynamic rewards programme. Students are now recognised for their commitment to regular attendance through exciting incentives such as term-end outings, in-school experiences like inflatable fun days, and special lunches. Attendance has become a high-profile focus, with in-house competitions adding a layer of friendly rivalry and motivation.

Alongside attendance, behaviour across the school has also seen a marked improvement. EMS has introduced a behaviour curriculum that clearly outlines expectations, helping students understand and meet the standards set for them. As a result, the school has reported a significant reduction in negative behaviour, contributing to a more positive and productive learning environment. The corridors and classrooms are calm, purposeful, and reflect the school’s commitment to fostering a respectful and focused atmosphere.

Recognising that strong communication with parents is vital to school success, EMS is working hard to improve engagement and address frustrations previously highlighted by families. A new weekly Parent and Carer Bulletin now provides direct updates from the Head of School, ensuring parents are informed about what’s happening across the school. In addition, upcoming opportunities will allow Mr Thompson to meet with parents, listen to their views, and collaborate on school improvement initiatives. Internally, EMS has also introduced a system to support staff in maintaining clear and consistent communication with parents - further strengthening the partnership between home and school.

Mr Thompson said: “It is a privilege to be Head of School at English Martyrs Catholic School and Sixth Form College. As a school we are on a journey to offer outstanding education and pastoral care to all of our students. We have already seen significant improvements in school culture this year and we have a great basis to build from. I am excited about what we can achieve as a school community along with our fantastic staff, parents and students.”

Mr Thompson’s vision for EMS is rooted in creating a culture of excellence, care and opportunity for every student. The early signs are promising, and the school community is optimistic about the continued progress throughout the year. With strong leadership, a clear direction and a commitment to student wellbeing and success, EMS is off to a fantastic start, and the future looks bright!
